Whole Clip

I chose the Matrix clip not only because I think it represents my personality as a huge tech guy and maybe even simulation theorist, but also as I can see a lot of opportunity for playing and distorting the type. By using typography as 0s and 1s and I can really play towards the simulation of the clip, and I can do interesting things with the stimulation section.

Thumbnails/ Kind of a storyboard.

Project 1 Thumbnails.

So, we’ve talked about this before. Thumbnails are the bane of my existence, and they never work with my process. I literally never use any thumbnails I’m force to make and I’m very much a hands on type of person. This is my take on them for this project, as I struggled to understand the thumbnail idea for a motion video in the first place.

Typeface Exploration.

Above pictured is the typeface exploration aswell as the rationale behind it.

Moodboard for the Matrix

Above is the moodboard for my assignment. For this, to represent the simulation and The Construct, I believe that simplicity is key to accurately portray the idea as a simulation, clean and simple, efficient like a machine. I decided to go with an almost black, almost white, and dark green. The green is only used to represent the code, as the code is the only “true” thing in this simulation.

Style Tiles

For my style tiles, I explored the possibilities I could use within my story board. I decided to work within the already pre-established fonts because I feel they very strongly represent the characters I “casted” them to.

My first one is the style I call “The Construct”, representing the construct in the Matrix, I made everything an eerie white with simple black text and a drop shadow, similar to how Morpheus is standing in it in the mood board.

For the second tile, I experimented with adding a “light source” to the scene, which I found to be really effective during the TV section where you’re supposed to be looking at a city skyline. I definitely am considering incorporating this into my design.

For the final one, I decided to try inverting the color schemes, I originally tried to do a white on green and then landed on a “code” looking green on black. This is to portray the idea of everything being code, similar to how the code flies in and out at segments in the graphic.

Video Script

Neo: Right now we’re inside a computer program?

Morpheus: Is it really so hard to believe? Your clothes are different. The plugs in your arms and head are gone. Your hair is changed. Your appearance now is what we call residual self image. It is the mental projection of your digital self.

Neo: This…this isn’t real?

Morpheus: What is real. How do you define real? If you’re talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, what you can taste and see, then real is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain. This is the world that you know. The world as it was at the end of the twentieth century. It exists now only as part of a neural-interactive simulation that we call the Matrix.
